Solar Panel Grants

Government-backed grants for solar panels are now available in Wales and the UK through the Energy Company Obligation 4 (ECO4) scheme. ECO4 aims to reduce harmful carbon emissions and assist vulnerable, low-income Welsh families in addressing fuel poverty.

What are Solar Panels?

Domestic solar PV panels are installed on your roof to capture energy from the sun’s rays and convert it into electricity. This electricity is then used to power your home appliances. Solar PV panels are a renewable energy source that doesn’t produce harmful emissions, making them an environmentally friendly choice.

As a way to generate cheap, green energy, solar PV systems are becoming increasingly popular. By installing a solar PV system on your roof, you can become less reliant on the grid and its fluctuating energy prices. Generating your own electricity allows you to significantly reduce your electricity bills.

Additionally, battery packs can be paired with solar panels to store excess energy generated during the day for use when the sun goes down. This ensures a continuous supply of renewable energy, further reducing reliance on the grid and maximizing your energy savings.

What is the ECO Grant Scheme?

The ECO 4 grant scheme is part of the UK and Welsh governments’ commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and help lower-income families in Wales cope with the rising cost of heating their homes.

The ECO scheme runs until March 2026, with £4 billion in grant funding set aside by the largest energy companies to install energy efficiency measures such as solar panels and insulation.

Solar Panel FAQs

In most cases, installing solar panels on your roof is considered permitted development, so no planning permission is needed. However, there are certain situations where permission is required, such as for properties in conservation areas or listed buildings.

Yes, solar panels can still generate electricity on cloudy days, although their efficiency is reduced. They require daylight, not direct sunlight, to produce energy.

The amount you can save depends on your energy consumption and the size of your solar panel system. Typical solar PV installation will generate around 3,000 kWh of electricity.

While according to OFGEM the typical household uses approximately 2,900 kWh of electricity annually.

Solar panels require minimal maintenance. It’s advisable to have them cleaned occasionally and inspected to ensure they are functioning optimally.
